Terms of use

These terms are between you and KATABA LLC (“Kataba”, “we”). By using this website or the Kataba application, you agree to them. If you do not, please do not use them.

1. Licence

Kataba is licensed, not sold. Subject to these terms and to Apple’s Licensed Application End User Licence Agreement, we grant you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to use the app on Apple devices that you own or control, for your own learning.

Where these terms and Apple’s standard Licensed Application EULA conflict, Apple’s EULA governs the licence to the app itself.

2. What you may not do

• Copy, redistribute, resell or sublicense the app or its bundled dictionary, lesson and reading data.
• Reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the app, except to the extent that law expressly permits it despite this restriction.
• Extract the bundled datasets for use in another product or to train a model.
• Remove or obscure any copyright or attribution notice.

3. Your content

What you write in the app is yours. It stays on your device; we claim no rights over it and, as set out in the privacy policy, we never receive it.

4. Third-party services

If you enable sentence generation by entering your own Anthropic API key, your device communicates directly with Anthropic’s API. That use is governed by your own agreement with Anthropic, you are responsible for any charges it incurs on your account, and we are not a party to it. We make no warranty about the accuracy of generated sentences.

5. Learning content

Vocabulary, glosses, vocalisations, grammar notes and generated sentences are teaching material. We work to keep them accurate and welcome corrections, but we do not warrant that every entry is free of error, and the app is not a substitute for instruction, a dictionary of record, or professional translation.

Scriptural and classical passages included for reading practice, and the reference data behind the dictionary and grading, come from the third-party sources credited in section 6.

6. Third-party content and attributions

Kataba is built on open data and open-source work by others. The notices below are given as those licences require. Each licence governs its own material; where a licence and these terms conflict, the licence prevails.

Dictionary, roots and conjugations

Headwords, English glosses, roots and conjugation tables are distilled from Wiktionary, taken from the machine-readable extracts published at kaikki.org (Tatu Ylonen, wiktextract). Wiktionary content is used under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International Licence.

Reading disambiguation

The association tables that help the app choose which reading of an unvowelled word a sentence calls for are mined from the Tashkeela corpus of vocalised Arabic, published under the GNU General Public Licence v2: T. Zerrouki and A. Balla, “Tashkeela: Novel corpus of Arabic vocalized texts, data for auto-diacritization systems”, Data in Brief (2017), doi:10.1016/j.dib.2017.01.011. Only aggregate counts and individual word forms were extracted; no corpus text is included in the app.

Diacritisation model

The on-device model that restores short vowels is CATT (Character-based Arabic Tashkeel Transformer) by Abjad AI, used under the Apache License 2.0 and converted to Core ML. Reference: “CATT: Character-based Arabic Tashkeel Transformer”, arXiv:2407.03236, github.com/abjadai/catt.

Vocabulary order

The order in which words are taught is derived from frequency counts computed over the Leipzig Corpora Collection (Arabic news 2020 and 2022, Arabic Wikipedia 2021), whose downloadable corpora are provided under a Creative Commons Attribution licence: D. Goldhahn, T. Eckart and U. Quasthoff, “Building Large Monolingual Dictionaries at the Leipzig Corpora Collection: From 100 to 200 Languages”, Proceedings of LREC 2012, wortschatz.uni-leipzig.de. Counts were also computed over the Arabic OpenSubtitles corpus distributed by the OPUS project. Only aggregate counts derived from these corpora inform the app; no corpus text is included in it.

Qur’anic text and translation

The Arabic text is the Uthmani edition published by the Tanzil Project and is reproduced verbatim, unchanged. Tanzil’s notice is reproduced here as its terms require:

If you believe something here is credited incorrectly or incompletely, write to info@katabaeducation.com and we will correct it.

7. Availability

We may update, change or discontinue the app or any part of it. Features that depend on Apple’s operating-system capabilities may change when those capabilities change. We are not obliged to maintain compatibility with versions of iPadOS that Apple no longer supports.

8. Disclaimer of warranties

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the app and this website are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

9. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, KATABA LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or exemplary damages, or for lost data or lost profits, arising out of your use of the app or this website. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid for the app in the twelve months before the claim arose.

10. Purchases and refunds

Purchases are made through the App Store and are subject to Apple’s terms. Refunds are requested from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wyoming, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules, and the courts of Sheridan County, Wyoming have exclusive jurisdiction, except where mandatory consumer-protection law in your country of residence provides otherwise.

12. Changes

We may revise these terms. The current version is always posted here with its effective date; continuing to use the app or the site after a change means you accept the revised terms.
